Class 1-309 is learning about solving story problems in math. For each problem, students are learning how to follow steps to help them understand, draw, represent on a model, explain, and solve a story problem. Here are the steps we usually take when we see a new story problem:
1. Read and underline: Read the problem and underline the important parts.
2. Retell: Retell the problem in your own words to make sure you understand it.
3. Draw: Draw a quick sketch to help you solve the problem.
4. Model: Choose a model to help you show your thinking. Some models we have been using include the ten frame, math rack, and number line.
5. Explain: Explain your thinking by writing a number sentence or by telling how you solved it.
6. Solve: Solve the problem by answering the question.
